Gavin Newsom’s bold claims of slashing California’s homelessness ring hollow after $27 billion in spending leaves over 187,000 still on the streets, exposing decades of Democratic mismanagement.
Newsom’s Long History of Broken Promises
In 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom pledged to end chronic homelessness within 10 years. Chronic homelessness persisted despite housing 7,000 people. As governor since 2019, he repeated ambitious goals, promising 3.5 million housing units by 2025 and statewide leadership. Housing shortages of hundreds of thousands to millions persist. This pattern frustrates conservatives who value accountability over endless promises. Under Jerry Brown from 2011-2019, unsheltered numbers grew tens of thousands as he treated it as a local issue.
Massive Spending Yields Limited Results
California allocated $27 billion from 2019 to 2026 on homelessness through programs like HHAP, totaling over $5 billion. Homelessness reached 187,000 in 2024, with 124,000 unsheltered. The State Auditor criticized Newsom’s Interagency Council for poor monitoring after $20 billion spent. Newsom rejected right-to-shelter proposals in 2019 and banned temporary shelter funding in state grants. Prioritizing permanent housing over immediate shelters contributed to encampments in LA Skid Row and San Jose Coyote Creek. Taxpayers see government overreach without measurable wins.
Selective 2026 Claims Amid Ongoing Crisis
In January 2026’s State of the State, Newsom claimed a 9% unsheltered drop in 2025 versus a national 18.1% rise. April 2026 brought $145.4 million HHAP to eight regions. Prop 1 from 2024 exceeded targets with 6,919 beds and 27,561 slots. Caltrans cleared 12,000 encampments since 2021 post-Grants Pass v. Johnson ruling. Overall homelessness dropped just 4%, and totals hover near 200,000. Critics highlight unbuilt housing goals sustain shortages. This selective progress does little for families enduring urban decay.
Political Liability and Conservative Contrast
Newsom blames locals and predecessors like Brown while building his national legacy. Local governments receive funds but face defunding threats for poor spending. Homeless advocates oppose sweeps, favoring housing-first despite evidence gaps. The crisis haunts Newsom after 20 years involved, from San Francisco to Sacramento. In Trump’s 2026 presidency, such fiscal mismanagement underscores needs for limited government, border security to curb related pressures, and common-sense policies over woke spending sprees. California outperforms nationally in rhetoric, not reality.

Another state long run by democrats that is an example of abject failure , fraud and the highest cost of living around. And rhe sadder part is that the democrats think this clown is capable of running the country. No leasership, no solutions, no ideas , no abilityto fix or run anything effectively and he is one of their top candidates to run the country. What a joke. Look at all the states and cities run by democrats and the same problem apply. but they are to interested in impeachment and the 25th amendment from someone who is trying to do something and people can’t see it.
