Cold Case Team Believes They Identified Zodiac Killer

One of the most infamous, unsolved cold cases to date is believed to be solved; a group of specialists in cold cases has announced they officially IDed the Zodiac Killer.

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who preyed on residents of San Francisco in the late 1960s. He was coined the nickname after he revealed his pseudonym to local newspapers in encrypted taunted messages in the form of letters.

Well, the case breakers are a team of 40 former law enforcement agents and military intelligence officers; they linked the Zodiac Killer to a killing that took place hundreds of miles away from San Francisco.

According to Fox News, the team of investigators believe a man by the name of Gary Poste was the Zodiac Killer and also responsible for the death of Cheri Jo Bates, a woman whose death still hasn’t been solved.

A 1975 memo written by the Riverside Police Department declared Cheri Jo Bates (who was murdered in Riverside, California) a victim of the Zodiac killer. This came after a note was sent to their headquarters once the murder took place.

The Case Breakers also revealed Poste was a former Air Force veteran that received medical checkups for a gun incident that occurred just 15 minutes away from the location of Bates’ murder.

There was a watch found at the crime scene with white paint, which is even more eerie because Poste was a painter for over four decades.

The FBI and Riverside Police Department have not declared Poste as the killer; they have also not let the Case Breakers obtain DNA from Poste who died in 2018.

More Details on the Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco area in the late 1960s. He boasted in his encrypted letters about killing over 37 people; although, authorities have only linked him to five killings and two other stabbings.

The Zodiac gained public attention after local newspapers published his encrypted messages in their newspaper; they did this once the Zodiac threatened to bomb school buildings if they refused to do so.

Only two of his ciphers have been cracked and the other two remained unsolved to this day.  Most of the Zodiac’s attacks occurred in the Bay Area between 1968-1969; he targeted young couples and a lone cab driver.

One of the Zodiac’s Letter was Cracked in 2020

In 2020, the Zodiac Killer’s “340 cipher” (which was unsolved for over 50 years) was finally cracked by amateur coders.

The message read ‘I hope you are having a great time trying to catch me.’ It continued with the Zodiac Killer stating he wasn’t afraid of the gas chamber. He also made odd remarks, stating he was collecting victims to be his slaves in the afterlife.
