Twin earthquakes just struck Venezuela 39 seconds apart, and U.S. government models warn the true death toll could reach 100,000 — while the socialist government controls the only official count.
Story Highlights
- A 7.2 foreshock and a 7.5 mainshock hit Venezuela on June 24, 2026 — the most powerful quakes in the country in over 125 years.
- Venezuela’s acting president confirmed at least 164 dead and nearly 1,000 injured, but U.S. Geological Survey models put the likely death toll in the thousands or higher.
- Over 10,000 people are reported missing, and buildings collapsed across Caracas and the state of La Guaira.
- Tsunami alerts briefly went out to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands before being lifted.
A Rare “Doublet” Earthquake Rocks Venezuela
At 6:04 p.m. local time on June 24, 2026, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe, about 160 kilometers west of Caracas. Just 39 seconds later, a larger magnitude 7.5 mainshock hit near the town of Yumare in Yaracuy state. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) calls this rare back-to-back event a “doublet.” Both quakes were shallow — striking between 8 and 10 miles deep — which made the shaking far more destructive at the surface.[3]
The 7.5 mainshock is the largest earthquake to hit Venezuela since 1900.[7] In parts of southeastern Caracas, nearly all high-rise buildings took heavy damage or collapsed entirely. Venezuela’s main international airport shut down. At least 20 aftershocks followed within hours, and USGS forecasters said a magnitude 6.0 or larger aftershock in the coming week carried roughly a 40% chance of occurring.[14]
Death Toll Confirmed at 164 — But the Real Number May Be Far Higher
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed at least 164 people killed and nearly 1,000 injured in a national address.[8] But those numbers come entirely from Venezuela’s state-run broadcaster. No independent international agency — not the United Nations or the Red Cross — has deployed field teams to verify the count. Opposition leaders, many living abroad, set up a missing persons tracking website that showed over 10,000 people unaccounted for as of early June 25.[16]
The USGS issued a rare “red alert” through its PAGER casualty modeling system. That alert goes out only once or twice a year globally. The models estimated a 44% chance that the final death toll lands between 10,000 and 100,000, and a 30% chance it exceeds 100,000. Economic losses could reach between $10 billion and $100 billion — potentially 20% of Venezuela’s entire economy.[14] These are model estimates, not confirmed figures, but they signal a disaster far larger than what state media is reporting.
Socialism’s Legacy Makes the Damage Worse
Venezuela’s crumbling infrastructure — the direct result of decades of socialist mismanagement — almost certainly made this disaster deadlier than it needed to be. Experts noted that unreinforced brick masonry buildings are common throughout Caracas. That type of construction is banned in earthquake-prone U.S. states like California precisely because it collapses so easily. Venezuela’s government has long ignored building codes, leaving millions of citizens in dangerous structures with no recourse.[3]

Tsunami alerts briefly went out for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Aruba, and Bonaire before being lifted.[2] Communication failures cut off the town of Morón near the epicenter, leaving a gap in damage reports. President Donald Trump pledged immediate U.S. support following the disaster. The Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency, but with state media controlling the narrative and independent journalists facing restrictions, getting the full truth out of the country remains a serious challenge.[7]
