A Texas courtroom descended into violence when convicted murderer Jaquarius Lewis, 27, allegedly punched his own defense attorney in the face moments after receiving a maximum 50-year prison sentence for a deadly 2024 shooting.

Veteran Attorney Knocked Unconscious

Defense lawyer John Petruzzi, who has represented hundreds of murder suspects over 46 years, was allegedly struck by Lewis on March 28 in a Harris County courtroom. The attorney told Fox26 he was immediately knocked unconscious and only regained awareness when emergency responders surrounded him. Witnesses reported Petruzzi fell backward into a chair, struck a counter, and collapsed to the ground. The experienced attorney later expressed shock, stating he had never been attacked by a client during his lengthy career.

Lewis faced sentencing for the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Quincy Johnson in Houston. According to the Houston Police Department, officers found Johnson unresponsive in his apartment with a fatal gunshot wound. Witnesses reported Johnson was standing on his balcony when two male suspects walked by and shot him. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspects, and Lewis was arrested the following day after police received a tip identifying him as the shooter.
